Not to be confused with Buthidae.
Bittacidae is the family of scorpion flies also known as Hangingflies.
Morphology[]
Scorpion flies have elongtaed legs and abdomens. They have a densely veined pair of wings that are generally pigmented. Their clawed feet allow them to cling onto surfaces. They have a pair of mandibles used for chewing through the flesh of their prey. Males have a scorpion-like arc used for holding the female during reproduction. They are predatory insects and are ferocious hunters feeding on other soft-bodied insects.
