This large wasp (dolichovespula media) is a species of dolichovespula. Unlike dolichovespula maculata these wasps arent aggressive unless defending a nest. They are actually closer related to dolichovespula arenaria. The wasps are social and build large nests like many other dolichovespula species. There is one queen and many workers. Males are hatched in fall and late summer when the queen runs out of sperm to make female ofspring. New queens are grown in queen cells, Polistinae members would not have larger cells because all female are queens.
